It's Good to Be Mayor of Wasilla

It seems the Hockey Mom took full advantage of her city hall office.
Some of her first actions after being elected mayor in 1996 raised possible ethical red flags: She cast the tie-breaking vote to propose a tax exemption on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one, and backed the city's repeal of all taxes a year later on planes, snow machines and other personal property. She also asked the council to consider looser rules for snow machine races. Palin and her husband, Todd, a champion racer, co-owned a snow machine store at the time.

McCain Retracts Palin Statement

Saturday night found the Hockey Mom schmoozing in Philadelphia. When asked whether the U.S. should cross the border from Afghanistan into Pakistan, she replied "If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should." The Wrinkly White Haired GuyTM apparently hadn't approved the message and was forced to say she didn't know what she was talking about.
"She would not... she understands and has stated repeatedly that we're not going to do anything except in America's national security interest,"

And of course, he blamed the media:
"In all due respect, people going around and... sticking a microphone while conversations are being held, and then all of a sudden that's—that's a person's position… This is a free country, but I don't think most Americans think that that's a definitve policy statement made by Governor Palin."

Except of course the question wasn't asked in private, but while dozens of people were standing around with cameras (and microphones). So remember, just because she says it, doesn't mean she believes it.

Betrayal of Trust

Gov. Palin was caught using a private Yahoo! email account to conduct official state business. The account was hacked, emails were posted, and now the Feds are investigating.

Does McCain Know Spain?

Ummmm, maybe not.
The kindest explanation is that he was confused.

Lawsuit to Prevent GOP Caging

The Obama campaign has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to prevent GOP harassment of voters at the polls.
Robert Bauer, lead lawyer for the Obama campaign, said he had evidence that Michigan Republicans were engaging in a "particularly ugly brand" of voter challenging, using lists of foreclosed homeowners to compile a voter roll that could be used to challenge the residency of citizens who show up at the polls in November. Mr. Bauer field [sic] suit in federal court in eastern Michigan on behalf of the campaign and three Michigan residents in foreclosure procedures, seeking an injunction to stop the activity.

The Economic Fundamentals

The Wrinkly White Haired GuyTM has been saying our "economic fundamentals" are strong. Then yesterday, he redefined the term to mean "workers and small business", and proceeded to claim anyone who says the economy isn't strong is insulting those hard working people.

So Jake Tapper asked some economists what our economic fundamentals actually are, and whether or not they are indeed strong. The verdict? Not so much.

McCain's Dishonesty

Even Richard Cohen sees the Wrinkly White Haired GuyTM for what he is.
McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.

Amy Goodman Arrested at RNC

Democracy Now! host and producer Amy Goodman was arrested Monday at the Republican National Convention. She was arrested and charged with "obstruction of a legal process and interference with a peace officer" after attempting to find out about DN producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, who had been arrested earlier. All three have been released pending a court hearing.
All three were violently manhandled by law enforcement officers. Abdel Kouddous was slammed against a wall and the ground, leaving his arms scraped and bloodied. He sustained other injuries to his chest and back. Salazar's violent arrest by baton-wielding officers, during which she was slammed to the ground while yelling, "I’m Press! Press!," resulted in her nose bleeding, as well as causing facial pain. Goodman’s arm was violently yanked by police as she was arrested.
